Comments: 10 You just never know what's around the corner

Here’s something I didn’t expect: I was asked last week if I’d be interested in auditioning for Korn, for the role of keyboardist on their upcoming tour. Oddly enough, I’ve actually been on the road with them before – back in ’95 Machines opened for them on one leg of a US tour – though that had nothing to do with this particular opportunity. In any event, the timeline was tight but I figured that I’d take a stab at it.

From the standpoint of preparing for the audition, the timing couldn’t have been worse. At the time, I was trying to wrap up two other projects simultaneously – so between that and the very aggressive audition schedule, I ended up with just a handful of hours to prepare. I’m pretty meticulous, so this was a bit frustrating.
I learned three songs off the new record (all three of which were produced by the most excellent Atticus Ross, so they had some tasty synth & production work), and created rough approximations of the sounds.

The audition process itself was actually quite brief, due in part to a combination of the tight timeline and my flight into LA being late.

In the end, I don’t think I was able to demonstrate my capabilities particularly well. But on the plus side, I did get to say hi to Jonathan (it’s been 10 years), and met Richard Gibbs, who’s the musical director for the tour. Richard is responsible for, among other things, the music for the first season of The Simpsons. I still have fond memories of the “Patton” motif he used in an episode where Bart & some of the local kids take on Nelson and the other bullies.

Hmm. Shouldn't that have been "You just never know what's around the KORNER" ?

So, do you know when they'll be telling you that you got the gig?

wow...i remember that tour...that was pretty dern neat...although, You guys were running into some sound problems ...

Scott was wielding the megaphone thingy and was pretty perturbed about the sound, if I remember right..

Amish Korn Fight? KARF?...that would be pretty neat. If it doesn't happen, did you talk about a remix for 'em? I'm not sure if the kilt would look right on you, though? Oh, shit, but, maybe you could score a Keyboard stand designed by HR Giger...

As for their decision, I expect to know something within a few days.

neB, which show did you see? I recall that Scott was using the megaphone back then... which did tend to cause feedback problems on stage. Also, that tour included some pretty small venus (this was right before Korn became massive) - so I'm sure the quality of the sound was variable from show to show.

So, have you played with any big projects since Machines? Besides, of course, the obvious ARF.

Yea...it was at 'The Roxy' in Atlanta back in '95. It's more of a mid-sized venue...and it was shortly after your tour with stabbing westward and course of empire...[i think]. I remembered being really surprised by you guys touring with 'korn' and, also, that you were 'openning' for them [it seemed that MoLG was bigger at the time]...um...i gotta stop thinking about this...starting to feel old....

I haven't been a live sideman for anyone before - I've played my own stuff live, and been a sideman in the studio for a number of projects since Machines. I wasn't seeking out live gigs when the Korn situation came up, but I do think it'd be interesting. Especially given the direction of some of their new material... almost like a fusion between Korn and NIN. If you haven't heard it, check it out. I particularly like "Throw me away", which is one of the tracks that Atticus Ross produced.

That'd be a "no-go".

Oh well, it was worth a shot. It'll be interesting to see what they end up doing with their keyboardist for the live show.

And I was actually considering going to see them when they hit Chicago if you were on board....I'm not a big fan of the last album though....Atticus Ross or not.

That's a shame. I would have definitely hit up the Phoenix show. Not a big deal though. I'll just wait until I can see an ARF show again, it'll save me money and the dignity of having to deal with the "goth kids."
