Dear Fred,

Okay, I get it - Depeche Mode and David Byrne have big catalogs. Doesn't mean you need to play them every day.

p.s. - I'm pretty confident that I don't need to hear Trio's "Da da da" more than once every 25 years or so. Therefore, once a week is definitely "surplus to needs".

p.p.s - I like Siouxsie and The Cure, too - honest. But Christ, ease up a little ok?

---

Dear Cinemagic,

I like listening to film scores. That's why I tune into the film score channel. I don't really need you to play 10 minutes of dialog from each movie just to "put me in the mood" to hear the soundtrack. Thanks.

p.s. - the chick you use to announce the titles of films sounds like a cyborg.

---

Dear XM Comedy,

Thanks for the constant ads reminding me of what you're playing on other stations. As it turns out, if I wanted to know what kinds of great things are playing on OTHER stations, I'd tune in to OTHER stations.
Sincerenly,

Mike

p.s. - there's this thing in audio called "dynamic range". When you stitch a bunch of very different spoken word recordings together, it's natural that some will be VERY QUIET and some are VERY LOUD. Thanks to space-age polymers, there's now a device called a COMPRESSOR that can fix this problem, thereby obviating the need for listeners to keep cranking their volume knobs up and down every 30 seconds like monkeys on crack. Perhaps you could look into purchasing one of these devices at one of the next commerical breaks. I think there's one coming up in about ... 3... 2... 1 ah, here we are.

Wait. I thought XM didn't have commercials.

Some channels do, some don't. In general, music channels don't and news channels do. But XM's definition of "commercial" does not include XM promos. So they sprinlke those very liberally across some of the programming, especially the comedy channel I mentioned.

No doubt. The comedy channel is about 4 parts comedy to 1 part commercials for other XM stations. Since they generally play vignettes of about a minute long, what this means is that you hear four minutes of comedy, and one minute of commercials for the Blues channel and the Disney channel and the ESPN Zone. It's quite annoying.

Fred has improved somewhat. When we first got XM, literally every 5th song was a Smiths or Morrisey song. Now, they only seem to play either of those catalogs about 4 times a day, which isn't so bad. I don't really have anything against the Smiths, but I draw the line, you know?

But I fucking hate the Cure, I'll say that much.

Did I mention my Sirius Radio absolutely kicks ass? The unit I had (very early one) melted due to some venting issues, they replaced it no questions asked with a newer, better model, not a refurb as most companies love to do.

NO Commercials, even for other stations, hell, most stations don't even have dj's. There's a bumper here and there, but zero ads.

Mike, if you're in town get with me tomorrow and I'll let you mess around with the one in my car.

How much does Sirius run? I'm considering it, but then, I'm only in the car a little, and typically I can get by with just Burn Out At The Hydrogen Bar, because in my new Phoenix home, I only need to drive 10 minutes to get to work. That just pushed me to Chemical Halo as I pull into the parking lot.

I think they're both around $12 a month. At first it seems like a lot for something you can get for free (at least, it did to me), but once you try it it's easy to get hooked. The value proposition isn't as obvious as it is for something like Netflix, but it's there.

XM has some attractive specials if you know where to find them. I got the first 3 months free, and the receiver was only about $30. I'd be a lot more inclined to try Siruis if they tried to compete with XM's aggressive pricing, but so far they haven't.

That's kinda cool. I know we checked out Sirius when it came out, and we were looking at multiple hundreds in order to get the receiver, which was bullshit.

My girlfriend is obsessed with some radio show that got cancelled called Opie and Anthony, and she was told they're on satellite radio. We'll have to see which service.

Yeah, my receiver was a tad more than 30 smackers, thats for sure. But I still got it on a deal, got a Dish Network promo that they were obviously selling as at a loss to get people to buy the service, got roughly 250 bucks of equipment for 100. receiver, car kit, 3 months of service, no activation fee, etc.

And anything I can do to make DIsh network lose money I'll buy into :-)

plus, when the receiver died (above) they didn't send out a refurb, as is common practice with most tech companies. Also, having worked phone tech support a few times in my dark past, I can say that they do bust their ass when it comes to customer service. The hold time was a bit high, but they did their job right when I got to a human.
