For me, the highlight of the entire show was seeing the babes in the Namco booth. Okay, just kidding. It was really the babes in the Playboy booth.
All kidding aside, there were a few games that really grabbed everyone's attention, and a few games that -- while out of the way -- were still some jewels in the rough. I'm going against all the critics when I say this, but for me, Gran Turismo 4 was the game of the show. If you know me at all this isn't really a surprise, but after seeing Gran Turismo 3 I thought nobody could possibly do better on the console. Wow, was I wrong. GT4 is so unbelievably better than GT3. The physics are much, much more realistic (you don't just glide over a curb at 150mph) and the graphics are absolutely stunning. Combine that with online racing, and GT4 will be the game that defines the Playstation 2.
I'm seriously pondering getting an Xbox now (I know, I know) for Halo 2. I gave a friend a copy of Crimson Skies for his birthday, and he loved it (and the multiplayer was pretty damned good too). Between Halo 2, Crimson Skies, Riddick (which is an incredible looking game as well, btw), and Knights of the Old Republic, I think that's enough reasons to finally lay some money down.
What about the handhelds? I didn't get to see much of the PSP (and didn't want to stand in line for an hour to see the DS) but honestly I'm still up in the air. We have a GBA at home, and I'll play it every so often, but I don't find a whole lot of occasion to play it, and I'm still not convinced in the whole handheld gaming thing. Maybe it's just for kids, who knows.
Lastly, a couple comments about the show itself. First of all, kids, if you feel the need to sneak in by scamming someone's pass and you manage to make it by the guards, please don't get in my way, and close your mouth; it's okay to breath through your nose. I saw so many 14-year-olds with their jaws hanging open (either from the sheer multimedia experience, or from ogling the various girls dressed in ridiculous costumes) that I had to laugh. Kids, E3 is great, definitely the best big convention you'll ever go to, but you don't need to remind the world about that every three seconds. "Wow, this is so cool!" echoed throughout the halls. Hurray.
Lastly, for whichever company puts on the show: please, please, PLEASE, I beg of you, put a decent food court in between the halls. There's room for more than just burgers and fries, trust me. And believe me, it wouldn't hurt some of the show-goers to down a salad or two.
